Simple Tagging Widget

07.07.07: Version 0.4 released. No style definitions needed any more!

his is a Widget plugin to show a tag cloud generated by the WordPress plugin ‘Simple Tagging‘ in the sidebar.

For this plugin to work there must be the ‘Simple Tagging’ plugin activated and the ‘Sidebar Widgets‘ plugin activated as well.

Just drop the file ‘simple-tagging-widget.php’ into your plugin directory and activate the plugin. The go to the Themes->Sidebar Widgets panel and drag&drop the ‘Simple Tagging Tag Cloud’ box into your sidebar (and save). The tag cloud will be shown in the sidebar with the tag cloud options you configured for the ‘Simple Tagging’ plugin. That’s it.

    würde Dein plugin gerne testen und habe daher das benötigte automattic plugin runtergeladen, da ich es vorher nicht im Einsatz hatte, und da ist die Rede von den “scriptaculous files”, aber die sind in dem widgets folder nicht enthalten. (?) Kannst Du mir da weiterhelfen?

    @thomp: Just put the code into the “style.css” file of your theme. There is a sample style.css for the default WP Kubrick Style in the Simple Tagging zip-file. Look at the end of this file to find the needed lines. Depending on your theme, maybe you have to adjust this a little bit…

    Hi, I just wanted to let you know, that I modded the Simple Tagging Widget in order to produce valid (X)HTML. You can have a look at the blog in question here: http://ulrikkold.dk/hoeyerkold.....noegleord/ – note how it validates neatly.

    I modded it, as I have explained here: http://ulrikkold.dk/blog/view/392 – by changing the id in the widget from “tagcloud” to “tagcloudwidget” and then adding the #tagcloudwidget selector in the stylesheet next to the #tagcloud selector.

    I figure you could extend the code base with this fix? Otherwise just contact me and I will send you the fixes…

    My best guess (not having seen your sites) is that you did not include the stylesheet from the Simple Tagging plugin into your theme’s CSS?

    @all the guys asking, why there is a list and not a cloud: you have to style the list in your theme’s CSS. See readme.txt in downloaded zip for an example…

    @the guys with the bugs, I think you should ask the Simple Tagging plugin author about this. I am just using the functions of the plugin, so these errors should come from that (I have to give in, that I didn’t really have a look at your error explanations…)

    @amaury: As soon there is time, I will look into the new function. As I just started a new job, there is not in the moment ;)

    auch ich hatte das Problem mit der Listendarstellung, obwohl ich den CSS-Code eingebunden habe. Auch ein Update auf simpletaggingwidget 0.3 und simpletagging 1.6.7 brachte keine Abhilfe.
    Mit 2 zusätzlichen display:inline klappt es mit meinem Theme:

    Hallo Leute,

    ich versuche es nochmal direkt hier, weil mein Problem wohl am Widget liegt und nicht am Plugin selbst. Ich möchte auf der oben gelinkten Homepage eine Tag Wolke erstellen, die eben so auschaut, wie man die meisten Tag Wolken kennt. Eben in verschiedenen Linkfarben und Größen. Nun habe ich wirklich alles so gemacht, wie es in den Readme’s etc. steht und bekomme es trotzdem nicht so hin, wie ich es gerne hätte. Da ich nun schon seit 3 Tagen an dieser Sache sitze, würde ich mich echt freuen, wenn mir jemand dabei helfen würde. Bin eigentlich nicht unwissend, aber daran beisse ich mir wohl echt die Zähne aus.

    eigentlich bin ich ja ganz versiert mit wp aber ich bekomm die tagcloud einfach nicht hin. hab es mit widget und mal ohne widget versucht, aber anscheinend ist es mit dem jstheme nicht kompatibel.

    kann mirj emand sagen woran es liegt dass es in listen form dargestellt wird und nicht als tag cloud?

    Das Widget ist super, trotzdem wird bei der XHTM-Validierung immer noch gemeckert. Stylesheet ist bearbeitet. Kann das mal jemand nachprüfen? Die Sache betrifft immer einen einzelnen Cloud-Eintrag, der sich jedes mal ändert, da die Anordnung zufällig ist.

    Thank you for making a widget for Simple Tagging. However like several others mentioned in your site comments, I am having problems making the tags appear as a cloud.

    I followed your instructions and added the sample code from the readme.txt to my stylesheet.css file. However, the tags still appear as a list instead of a cloud.

    I am new to CSS. So I am wondering if I need to tweak the code somehow or put it in a different place in the file? I do not know where to start! Any ideas?

    @Andy: Use the newest version of Simple Tagging and of the Widget plugin and you don’t have to change the CSS on your own. You can style the cloud in the plugin options then…

    Thanks for answering my question so quickly! I removed the old code sections from my style.css, made sure that the Simple Tagging plugin was current and uploaded your latest version of the widget. However, I still cannot get it to form a cloud. From your widget configuration form, I am able to label the section, scale the text size, and sort the tags. But the tags still just form a list in the sidebar.

    Could there be something in my theme (Gemini-Plus) which is causing a problem? What should I look for?

    Andy, you’re right. In your sidebar everything anker is displayed as block.
    So, add this at the end of your CSS:

    #tagcloudwidget a {
    display: inline;
    padding: 0;
    }

    That should fix it.

    Hi! Erstmal vielen Dank für das tolle Plugin! Ich hab sogar als absoluter php, wordpress und Websitenneuling verstanden, wie ich es in meinen Blog einbinde. Nur ein Problem hab ich noch. Wenn man den Tag anklickt verschwindet die komplette sidebar. Was tu ich dagegen?

    Wirklich ein klasse Widget, vielen Dank! Wobei es vielleicht schön wäre, wenn man die Style-Informationen direkt im Widget-Menü einstellen könnte (Farbe, ausrichtung etc.). Außerdem fände ich es toll, wenn man direkt ein “Nofollow” für die Tags definieren könnte… Aber ansonsten TOP!

    bekomme ich die nicht weg. Entweder kann ich sie aus der gesamten sidebar entfernen, oder sie stehen vor allem in der sidebar. Eigentlich will ich, dass sie nur in der Tagcloud nicht da stehen..meinst du das geht? hier noch mein css teil für die pfeile:

    .entry ul li:before, #sidebar ul ul li:before {
    content: “0BB 020″;
    }

    wäre toll wenn du mir helfen könntest…

    I’m using a theme that is not widget ready and I would like to add the tag cloud to display in a div box I have added to the header of my blog instead of in a widget in the sidebar.

    Is it possible, if so how, can I use this without using it as a widget? Hope that makes sense. Is it possible to take parts of the widget and place it in the div box I’ve created to hold it?

    For your task, you don’t need my plugin, as the Simple Tagging Plugin itself gives you this functionality anyway. Ask there for help to integrate the tag cloud into the header as I’m better in PHP than in CSS which is demanded for this task ;)

    Great plugin but as many other cannot find the way to have to cloud on the sidebar. I get the tags but in a list and not a cloud.

    As I’m a super beginner in PHP and CSS I’ve tried to apply some of the solutions displayed in this thread but so far without success.

    Any idea what could be the cause ?

    I installed v0.4 with Simple Tagging 1.6.8.1. The code for the cloud renders all the tags with the same style information

    I have a small problem with simpletagging plugin.

    When i go to individual “tag pages”, the blog posts are displayed in full. i dont want to show full posts on those pages. i just want to show two-three lines of each article. how do i do it?

    plz help.

    Easy. In your tag-page (eg. tags.php) use < ?php the_excerpt() ?> instead of < ?php the_content(...) ?>.

    Great Widget!! I’m trying to limit the number of tags that are displayed within the cloud. Changing the number in the “Number of tags” field seems to have no effect. Is there a different variable that I need to set?

    Never mind. I found the solution. Unchecking the “Use global settings” box will apply all admin setting to the tag cloud.

    Hi Lee,
    I’ve installed/activated your plugin on my blog, but for some reason I can’t get it to work with my current theme, and my knowledge with this blog-programming is somewhat different than my usual.

    If you look at my page you’ll see that your plugin works just as it should, only the class definition is wrong for the theme, the tags ‘should’ be red, instead of green, and I can’t seem to fix it. I’ve tried to locate the class within the php, but like I wrote earlier, this is beyond my knowledge.

    Can you help me out?

    Bisher habe ich einen Bogen um die Tag-Wolken gemacht, mit dieser Anleitung werde ich es jetzt einmal probieren. Eine Veränderung der CSS hat sich mit der neuen Version ja erübrigt;-)

    Hi,
    hab heute mal eine WP-Version von 2.2.3 auf 2.3.3 aktualisiert und dabei auch die Plugins. Leider ist die Tag-Wolke jetzt nicht mehr vergleichbar mit früher: es wird nur ein kleiner Teil der Tags angezeigt und die Formatierungen – die ja früher den Wolkeneffekt brachten – sind weg. Siehe http://www.sozial-wissenschaft.de/ – lässt sich daran etwas machen?

    In der neuesten WP-Version gibt es eine neue Version von Simple Tagging, das die Tag-Funktionlität von WordPress nutzt. Daher funktioniert das alte Simple Tagging nicht mehr zuverlässig…

    ja, geht über die simple tagging optionen. ich empfehle aber ein update auf neues wp und simple tags, dann brauchst du mein plugin nicht und kannst das auch problemlos einstellen

    Hi Stefan,

    My comment is actually about your embedded video plugin (comments seem to be disabled on that page).

    Do you know how your plugin and the user’s codec support operates?

    The reason I ask, is that I have an mpg file that does play in VLC on my p.c., but doesn’t play through your plugin. (using wordpress 2.7)
    Vlc reports the codec as as an ‘mpgv’ type. The plugin DOES work with other video formats.

    So what I’m really asking, is how to determine which codecs your plugin / wordpress 2.7 will work with.

    Wp 2.9.2 Version .4 of siple tagging wodget.

    works great till I change the color of the text (Tag Cloud Options Most popular color:) using the simple tagging options. From then on I receive the message “No tags were found that match the criteria given.”

    Until I reset the options to the default.

    well, I installed and activated the 0.4 version of this plugin but it turned out that there was no ‘Simple Tagging Tag Cloud’ box on my “sidebar widgets” panel, how’s that?
